FIRST DAY OF ONLINE SCHOOL: September 2, 2020 –

Dear QTS Community (blind cc to staff, board and council)
Today was the first day of the 2020 School Year.  We have 115 students enrolled on day one with  65 on the reservation students and 50 off the reservation students.  This is 2 below last year’s start.  We have 5 kids not registered that are in consideration for enrollment.  The topic of the day was technology and students’ ability to connect at home.  We are identifying the issues and zeroing in on those issues.  The primary issues appear to be at the younger grade levels with devices that are out of the box (iPads and Chromebooks).  We suspect a combination of user error, network connectivity and Internet Service Provider issues.   We have a mechanism in place to identify, track and solve the issues.  We estimate that if we resolve 8-10 of the student connection issues daily that by the middle of next week we will have most of what we believe to be 40 issues resolved.  We will always struggle to resolve connectivity issues due to weak signals depending on student home locations.  Also, there was a nationwide Zoom issue today that peaked at 11 am today, again another issue we cannot resolve.  Most teachers resolved that issue by switching over to Google Meets.   We urge all to exercise patience, flexibility and persistence in problem solving. Today we served a total of 38 meals. We were aiming for 50 total.  We served 23 QTS students, 3 QVSD Students and 12 QTS staff.  We learned today that the USDA has opened up the ability for us to serve younger children not in school.  Stay strong, talk and help each other and next week we will be in a better place.  We are in unprecedented times.

Mark Decker
